PESHAWAR: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has convened a Wakmana Jirga (grand meeting of elders) on 26 June in Peshawar against the merger of Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Announcement to this effect was made by a JUI-F spokesman after a meeting of the party headed by its ameer Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday. The JUI-F leaders, anti-merger leaders from Fata Supreme Council, Fata Grand Alliance, Fata Wakmana Jirga, Qabailistan Tahaffuz Tehreek, Qabail Youth Movement, Fata Youth Alliance and student union activists attended the meeting.
Participants of the meeting expressed their views about the Fata-KP merger and voiced strong reservations about the constitutional amendment for this purpose. They termed the Fata-KP merger unconstitutional and refused to accept this amendment.
The meeting decided to convene a grand Jirga in Peshawar on 26 June which will be empowered to devise future plan of action against the merger.
The constitutional amendment bill for merger of Fata with KP was passed few days ago by the National Assembly and Senate and then signed by the President of Pakistan after which it became a law of the country. All the parliamentary parties, except the JUI-F and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), supported the bill.
