DIR/HANGU, 27 July: As many as 12 people including women and children were killed while another 24 sustained injuries in two separate traffic accidents in Dir Upper and Orakzai agency on Wednesday, officials said.

According to police, seven members of a family died and 10 others injured when a vehicle they were traveling in plunged into a ravine in Kohistan area of Upper Dir.

Local police said the ill-fated vehicle was on way to Lamoti area of Dir Kohistan when the driver lost control over the steering in Jandre area on Wednesday afternoon.

The police added that the injured and dead included children and women. The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, a passenger pickup plunged into a gorge in Naka village of Orakzai Agency on Wednesday, officials of political administration said.

The officials said that the passenger coach was on way to Hangu from Samana when the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a curve and fell into a ravine.

The injured were taken to Hangu Hospital wherefrom five of them were rushed to Peshawar in critical condition.

Following the incident, the driver escaped from the scene. Local residents of the area demanded of the political administration to take action against the driver. They said that the incident took place due to overloading as the driver had put 36 passengers in the vehicle.
