QUETTA, 20 October: At least 11 people were killed and 15 others sustained injuries when a blast occurred in a passenger bus on Saryab Road on Monday night, police and rescue officials said.

SSP Operations Quetta Abdul Waheed Khattak told media that a local city bus, carrying around 40 passengers, when reached Dukani Baba Chowk area on Saryab Road, a sudden explosion happened on its roof. The explosion was carried out through a remote control device which weighted five to six kilograms.

Rescue officials confirmed that two children were among the dead. All the injured were taken to Civil Hospital Quetta. The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical. The explosion was so powerful that it shattered windows of houses and markets in nearby areas. The bang of the explosion was heard in the entire area.

Baluchistan Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said that such attacks could not weaken the resolve of the provincial government to continue fighting against militants. He said strict action would be taken against miscreants.

Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch has announced Rs1 million compensation each for the heirs of the passengers who lost their lives in the blast. He also announced Rs500,000 each for critically injured passengers.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and other leaders condemned the blast and prayed for early recovery of the injured. The prime minister also directed the law enforcing agencies to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.
