PESHAWAR, 23 October: A suicide blast during a 9 Muharram procession near Shershah Haveli, Quetta Road in Jacobabad killed at least 22 people and injured several others on Friday.

Police said the dead included women and children. Security and rescue officials reached the spot after the blast and launched rescue efforts and investigation.

An emergency has been declared at the Civil Hospital Jacobabad, where the dead and the injured were shifted. It was feared that the number of casualties will increase as the condition of some of the injured was critical.

The heirs of the victims and other people staged violent protests in Jacobabad after the incident and demanded the government to bring the culprits to justice.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have condemned the blast and asked law enforcers to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has also asked the Inspector General Sindh Police to further strengthen security for Muharram processions in the province.
