PESHAWAR, July 12: Authorities have launched a three-day polio campaign in six districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to vaccinate children who have been displaced from North Waziristan as a result of military operation.
The Health Department authorities aim to vaccinate about 500,000 children in Bannu, Karak, DI Khan, Hangu, Lakki Marwat and Tank districts. About 4,000 teams have been formed to vaccinate children at homes and relief camps.
The Taliban had banned polio vaccination in North Waziristan for the last two years, and as a result more of the polio cases reported in the country during the two years belonged to North Waziristan.
With the beginning of military operation in North Waziristan, various private organisations asked the government to take emergent measures to contain the spread of poliovirus due to displacement of population from the tribal region to other areas.
