PESHAWAR, August 23: Administration of Peshawar district has demolished about 400 houses of Afghan refugees near Phase-III in Hayatabad township.
Administration officials say the refugees have been living there for the last 30 years illegally while the administration issued them notices three months ago to vacate the area.
They say some of the refugees vacated the houses while many were living there till now. Today the administration demolished all the 400 houses with the help of heavy machinery.
One of Afghan refugees expelled from their homes told TNN, “The government gave us 15 days deadline to vacate the area but we didn’t have sufficient resources to hire houses on rent.”
“Last night we requested the administration to extend the deadline by 15 days but they didn’t agree. Still we thank the [Pakistani] government for letting us live here for 30 years,” said another Afghan refugee.
