QANDAHAR, 19 October: Around 43 Afghan soldiers were killed on Thursday in a suicide attack on a military base in Kandahar, Ministry of Defense confirmed.

According to media reports, around 60 soldiers were deployed at the base in Chashmo area of Maiwand district. The reports, quoting Defense Ministry, said that only two soldiers are said to have been survived the attack whereas nine were injured and six unaccounted for. Ten insurgents died, the ministry said.

Defence ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri told media the attackers detonated at least one explosive-packed Humvee vehicle and razed the compound in the early morning assault.

He said that there was nothing left inside the camp as they have burned down everything they found inside.

The Taliban claimed the ambush in a message to journalists which said all 60 security personnel on the base were killed.

The attack is the third assault on a security installation this week as a day before terrorists carried out twin suicide blasts on a security camp followed by several hours of gunfight.

With this attack the total death toll reaches to more than 120, including soldiers, police and civilians this week.
