QUETTA, 09 May: The provincial government, having assistance of the Unicef, has initiated a seven-day campaign against malnutrition in 10 districts of Balochistan today.

The affected districts are: Washuk, Kharan, Chaghai, Noskhi, Mosakhel, Loralai, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah and Pashin.

In this connection, a discussion on mother-child care was held at the office of Boys Scouts Quetta here today. The participants said that presently 10 districts of Balochistan were faced with mother-child malnutrition, which resulted in an increase in mother-child mortality rate.

Talking to TNN, programme manager of the provincial nutrition programme, Nasir Bugti, said: “Objective of the programme is to focus on nutritional needs of pregnant women, women breastfeeding their kids and five to six years age children. We—in collaboration with World Food Program, Unicef and World Health Organisation—provide assistance at district headquarters hospital level to all the mal-nutrient women and children.”

It merits a mention here that every second Sunday of May is observed as the World Mother’s Day. Bearing in mind the increasing number of mother and child mortality rate, the provincial health department should take concrete steps to keep this disease at bay.
