Our Story

The Tribal News Network (TNN) was established in 2011 to address the information vacuum in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), a semi-autonomous region in Pakistan. For decades, the approximately 5 million residents of FATA lived under colonial-era laws that restricted fundamental freedoms, including speech, assembly, and publication. Following the 9/11 attacks, the region faced increased militancy, which further disrupted the lives of local communities. Mainstream media coverage, however, focused primarily on militancy and Talibanization, often perpetuating negative stereotypes about the local population.

In response, TNN was founded to provide a platform for local voices and counterbalance the prevailing narrative. Initially operating as a Call to Listen News service, TNN evolved into a radio news service, partnering with 20 local radio stations to disseminate news and information. With the advent of 4G connectivity in the region, TNN transitioned into a digital platform in 2016.

Today, TNN is a leading news provider and capacity-building organization, with correspondents covering all Pashtun areas, including Quetta in Baluchistan. The network also trains university students and local journalists in emerging areas.

Founded by journalists Muhammad Tayyeb alias as Tayyeb Afridi and Said Nazir, TNN draws on their firsthand experience working in the tribal areas. Although the tribal areas were formally merged into Pakistan in 2018, granting constitutional rights and parliamentary representation, the region continues to face challenges. The Pakistani government's commitments to the tribal areas remain unfulfilled, and TNN remains dedicated to telling the ongoing story of FATA and advocating for the rights of its people.
