‘Accused family putting pressure for patch up’ says Asma Rani’s brother

PESHAWAR, 12 March: The family members of medical college student Asma Rani, who was killed in Kohat for refusing a marriage proposal, have alleged that accused family has been pressurizing them for a patch up.

Speaking at a news conference in Peshawar press club on Monday, Asma Rani’s brother, Muhammad Imran said that the family of Mujahjid Afridi, the alleged murderer of his sister, had been adopting different tactics to force them for a possible patch up.

He termed as baseless some media reports which stated that they had reconciled with the accused family.

“We will never reconcile with the accused family for the sake of money. We wish the accused is sentenced as per law of the land,” he remarked.

He informed that Mujahid Afridi’s family continued to threaten them and force them for reconciliation.

Asma Rani, a third-year student of Abbottabad Medical College, Abbotabad, was shot dead allegedly by Mujahid Afridi on January 29 near her house in Kohat. Rani succumbed to wounds at a local hospital where she nominated Mujahid as her alleged killer in a recorded statement that went viral on social media. According to the deceased’s family, Mujahid wanted to marry Asma and killed her when she refused to accept his marriage offer.

The suspect reportedly fled to Saudi Arabia from Benazir Bhutto Airport Islamabad and later moved to UAE. The KP police had approached the Federal Investigation Agency for the issuance of red warrants against the accused, after which he was arrested by Interpol from Sharjah and was brought to Pakistan.

Upon his arrival in Islamabad, Mujahid was handed over to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police which was present at the airport beforehand.
