PESHAWAR, 19 October: The Taliban militants in Afghanistan occupied Ghormach district of Faryab district after severe fighting on Sunday night.

Fighting was continuing for the last one week in the district situated near the Turkmenistan border and the Taliban finally occupied all the important government buildings in the district on Sunday night. The security forces in the area have taken refuge in a centre of the Afghan security forces near the area after retreating from the district.

A local official said the district police chief and 60 of his men have fled to nearby mountains where they remain surrounded by militants without any reinforcements. He feared that all of them will be captured by the Taliban.

The Afghan Interior Ministry has not offered any comment so far over the development. The district has come under attack from the Taliban several times.
