PESHAWAR: The Taliban militants in Afghanistan have rejected reports that they met with an Afghan government delegation this week in Saudi Arabia.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid issued the statement after media reports that a meeting was held to discuss security issues ahead of Afghanistan’s parliamentary elections scheduled within a month. Media reports had claimed that the meeting was held amid fears of attacks on polling stations and campaign rallies. It was claimed that the Taliban had also agreed on a limited prisoner release.
The Taliban have generally insisted on negotiating only with the United States, but plans for another meeting with American officials broke down over US demands for a three-month ceasefire. The Taliban say they will not enter talks unless US troops leave the country.
