PESHAWAR: The person who attacked Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal is affiliated with Tehreek-e-Labbaik, says initial report.
The attacker, Abid Hussain, is said to be impressed with the speeches of Tehreek-e-Labbaik leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi. The report prepared by the police and district administration said he joined the movement through its district president Shahid Rafique Madani and soon became its active member and president for union council Korala youth wing.
The report said Abid’s views radicalised after participation in the Faizabad sit-in.
During the corner meeting in Narowal, Abid was sitting on stage and shot at the interior minister from a distance of 15 yards as he was leaving the meeting. He had earlier confirmed arrival of the minister from the event organisers. A policeman grabbed the assailant as soon as he took out the weapon. He misfired, and the bullet brushed past Ahsan Iqbal’s shoulder and hit him in the abdomen. Ahsan Iqbal is currently under treatment in Lahore.
The suspect was presented before an anti-terrorism court on Monday and was handed over to the police on a 10-day physical remand.
Meanwhile, Tehreek-e-Labbaik leaders Khadim Rizvi and Afzal Qadri have condemned attack on Ahsan Iqbal and demanded judicial inquiry into the matter.
