All roads in Galiyat are cleared after heavy snowfall: GDA

ABBOTTABAD: The main road between Abbottabad and Murree and link roads in Galiyat are being used by tourists after they have been cleared from the snow, said a press release issued by Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) here on Monday.

On the other side, the met department forecast a three days long spell of heavy snow which is expected in Galiyat region from February 12 till February 15 of this month. It said one more spell of snowfall is also expected from 25 February this month.

The press release said that after the snowfall, vehicular traffic on all minor roads linking several rural localities with the main towns of  Nathiagali & Abbottabad has been restored.

Talking to media, Director General of GDA Raza Ali Habib said that Galiyat region is the major tourist attraction spot across the country with the recent improvement of infrastructure development of the area, the number of tourists has increased to manifold compared to past years.

More than 25 million tourists paid visit to Galiyat region throughout 2018 and thousands of people coming from across the country enjoyed the snowy season with its serene beauty, he said.

Raza further said improvising smooth flow of commuters at winter season is the major challenge due to unexpected snowfall and snow sliding on a large scale at different spots ,thus causing hindrance in movement & operational activities.

Speaking to media, deputy commissioner Abbottabad Amir Afaaq said that thousands of tourists  have paid visit to enjoy the snowy season amid the unprecedented snow this year which made it difficult for the authorities to clear roads due to uninterrupted flow of tourists.

He added that it was necessary to stop traffic flow for carrying out clearance and operational activities.

In many areas of Galiyat, roads were blocked by glaciers and snow slides which took local administration a lot of time to get the roads cleared, he said and revealed that 13 feet snow was recorded in Thandiyani , Ayubia , Changlagali , Dongagali and other hilly areas of Galiyat.
