PESHAWAR: Another doctor died of coronavirus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, after which the death toll of doctors from COVID-19 in the province reached 45.
The Provincial Doctors Association said in a statement that Dr Anila Naseer died at the MH Hospital on Sunday. She was diagnosed with coronavirus and remained on ventilator for several days. She was a gynecologist and worked for several years in a government hospital. In 2007, she left her government job to start her own clinic.
Doctors are at increased risk of contracting coronavirus as they come in contact with various infected persons in hospitals and clinics. Shortage of protective equipment at government hospitals make them even more vulnerable. The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has demanded of the government to take effective measures including the deliverance of Shuhada Package for the welfare of families of the deceased doctors.
Four nurses have also died of corona in KP, while hundreds of members of paramedical staff and Class-IV employees working in different hospitals have also contracted coronavirus.
Keeping in view the major role of doctors in fight against corona, the Pakistan government has decided to provide corona vaccine first to the frontline health workers and the process is continuing. The quota of vaccine for respective districts in KP has been allocated and the health officials who have registered themselves for the vaccination are getting it. Special teams have been trained to administer corona vaccine. In Peshawar, the facility is available at special counters at the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) and Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC).
Overall in KP, as many as 158 new cases of COVID-19 surfaced during the past 24 hours, taking the provincial tally for confirmed cases to 68,338.
According to official data, four more patients died of corona taking the death toll to 1,952. As many as 154 patients also recovered from the virus overnight, taking the number of total recoveries to 63,953.
In Pakistan, as many as 554,474 corona cases have been reported so far with 11,967 deaths and 510,242 recoveries.
Official data shows that 1,542 more people recovered from the virus during the last 24 hours. The data shows that 1,847 corona patients are in critical condition across the country.
