The attack in Buner happened a day after an assistant sub-inspector of police was shot dead in a similar attack in Bannu.

The ongoing three-day polio vaccination campaign in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is turning out to be the toughest in recent times as it is marred by controversies and attacks on polio teams.

A huge mess was created by some elements in some parts of KP, particularly in Peshawar, by spreading rumours that the vaccination is causing reaction and it is severely affecting the health of children. Hundreds of children were brought to different hospitals by panicked parents after the rumours spread quickly and announcements in this regard were also made in mosques. Several videos based on rumours were also spread on the social media and an angry mob also attacked a health facility in Mashukhel area of Peshawar and set it on fire on pretext of polio vaccination reaction. Nine of them have been arrested so far, while a man making fake video about so-called reaction of polio drops has also been arrested.

However, the problems didn’t end there as two policemen involved with polio security duties have also been killed during the last two days. Despite all these problems, the campaign is continuing in most parts of KP, but it will certainly miss its targets due to so many challenges and controversies around the campaign.
