SWAT, 1 November: The Awami National Party (ANP) leader and former federal minister Muhammad Afzal Khan Lala was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Durushkhela area of Matta tehsil in district Swat on Sunday. Afzal Khan 85, died in Military Hospital (MH) Rawalpindi on Saturday night. He was suffering from breathing problem and was under treatment MH Rawalpindi for last few years.
Hundreds of locals, ANP leaders and workers and politicians from various parties participated in his funeral.
The head of Bacha Khan Education Trust Dr Khadim Hussain told TNN that Afzal Lala had always struggled for the rights of Pakhtun and tried hard to bring peace in Pashtun region despite facing threats from various circles.
Hailing from Bar Durushkhela area of Matta tehsil in Swat, Afzal Khan Lala got great fame after standing up against militancy. He survived several life attempts from the militants. He never left Swat even after the Taliban occupation of the area. He was awarded Hilal-e-Sjhujaat gallantry award by the President of Pakistan for his brave stance against militants.
