JAMRUD, 15 November: Political and social workers favoring repealing of the century-old colonial law Frontier Crime Regulations (FCR) staged a protest rally against the holding of a Jirga by the Fata grand alliance here on Sunday.
The rally was attended by the workers of Fata Siasi Ittehad, an alliance of different political parties and Fata lawyers’ Forum, a body of tribal lawyers. It started from Jamrud stadium and ended at Takhta Baig after passing through the historic Bab-e-Khyber.
The purpose of the rally was to create awareness among tribal people about their rights and invite them to take part in the sit-in that would be held in Islamabad on Monday, said a participant of the rally.
“This is the first time in the country’s history that people of tribal areas are rising for their rights. This will turn out to be a historic day. We demand rights for ourselves. Every tribal person should come with us tomorrow. If the bill, which has been tabled in the National Assembly, is withdrawn, the tribal people will live in slavery for life,” remarked an enraged worker.
The sit-in has been jointly called by the Fata Siasi Ittehad, Fata Lawyers’ Forum and the fata members of parliaments. However, the tribal MPs have now withdrawn their support citing the reason that the Prime Minister has constituted a committee for Fata reforms and their protest will be meaningless till the outcome of the committee proceedings.
