Anti-merger protesters set a fire to a vehicle of Police officer in Darra Adam Khel.

DARRA ADAMKHEL: Anti-merger protesters in Darra Adamkhel tribal sub-division Kohat district on Monday set fire to a vehicle of a police officer who had to flee to save his life.

Local sources said people in Sheraki area of Darra Adamkhel were holding protest against merger of erstwhile Fata with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when station house officer (SHO) Waqar from Kohat arrived there in his car. The protesters exchanged hot words with the police officer and got infuriated after which they started pelting stones on the private car of the SHO. The protesters also hit the car with batons and then set it on fire, damaging it completely.

The police officer had to flee the scene to save his life. Some reports suggested that the SHO sustained minor injuries due to stone pelting by protesters.

The Qaumi Tehreek of Darra Adamkhel condemned the attack on police officer and demanded investigation in the incident. The version of police wasn’t available immediately.

Some of the tribes in Darra Adamkhel have decided to continue protests against merger of erstwhile Fata with KP. They are demanding reversal of the merger.

Traffic police tortures journalist in Bannu.

Bannu Press Club general secretary Fareed Niazi was injured allegedly due to torture by a traffic police personnel on Monday.

The press club president Gohar Wazir said journalist Fareed Niazi was busy in making a report on traffic jam and encroachments in Bannu Bazaar on Monday when a traffic police personnel subjected him to torture due to which he sustained injuries. He said Fareed Niazi was taken to District Headquarters Hospital from where he was discharged after treatment.

Gohar Wazir alleged that the traffic police personnel also snatched the mobile phone of journalist. He said a report has been filed against the policeman in City Police Station.

After the incident, an emergency meeting of Bannu Press Club office-holders was called in which the participants demanded Inspector General KP Police, Deputy Inspector General Bannu and District Police Officer to take action against the traffic police personnel for torturing journalist who was highlighting people’s problems due to traffic mess and encroachments in the city.

The Betani Press Club president Ayub Betani also condemned torture of journalist and demanded strict action against policeman involved in torture.
