PESHAWAR, 10 November: The three-day anti-polio drive, kicked off today throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata faced a set back as people in Malakand and Orakzai tribal district refused to administer the anti polio vaccine to their children until their demands are met.

According to reports the dwellers of Khanwari area boycotted anti polio drive as a protest against the government’s inability to build a road. The people were of the view that they had a dispute with their fellow tribesmen over the road but the local administration didn’t take any step to resolve it. “A jirga of the local elders have decided to boycott anti-polio drive until the problem is resolved. In the meantime, we would not give anti polio drops to our children as a token protest,” remarked one of the elders.

On the other hand, Saeed Khel tribe of the lower Orakzai Agency also refused to administer polio drops to their kids, saying, “the political administration had illegally handed over a piece of our land to our rival tribe. And when we protest, a number of our elders were arrested by the administration and put into jail.”

They threatened they would continue their boycott until all the arrested men were set free.

According to reports talks were  underway with both the tribes till the filling of the report.
