PESHAWAR, 9 November: Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) has been elected as speaker of the National Assembly for the second bagging 268 votes against his rival Shafqat Mehmood of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who got 31 votes.
Polling was held for the election of the speaker in the National Assembly hall on Monday. Except PTI, rest of the parties including PTI’s allies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Jamaat-e-Islami and Quomi Watan Party supported Sadiq in the run for the speaker’s office.
Ayaz Sadiq is the first speaker in Pakistan’s parliamentary history who has been elected as speaker twice during the same tenure. He was previously elected as speaker of the lower house after winning a National Assembly seat from NA 122, Lahore. He had defeated PTI’s chief Imran Khan in 2013 general elections.
He was disqualified by an election tribunal a few months back by accepting Imran Khan’s election petition and announcing re-polling in the constituency. Sadiq reclaimed his seat in by-election wherein he defeated PTI’s Aleem Khan by a narrow margin.
After taking oath of his new office, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq thanked the members of the lower house and said he would continue his efforts for the supremacy of parliament and continuation of democracy.
