BARA, 14 December: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan has decided to reopen Bara Bazaar in Khyber Agency in the last week of the current month.

The shopkeepers of Bara Bazaar said they have received instructions from the political administration to begin cleaning of the shops and the bazaar as the bazaar will be inaugurated within a few days. Sources said the governor will himself inaugurate the bazaar in the last week of December.

Bara Bazaar, which had more than 10,000 shops, was closed in 2009 due to military operation in the area against the militants.

A shopkeeper told TNN that it will be a very positive step from the government. “The opening of the bazaar will greatly facilitate the people. The government should have given some financial assistance to the shopkeepers to resurrect their businesses,” he said.

Another shopkeeper said people sustained losses of millions but no one paid them anything as compensation. “We have no money to reopen our shops. The shopkeepers of Bara Bazaar should also be given compensation like other operation affected people,” he said.
