BARA, 28 May: The people affected by military operation in Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency have demanded the government to increase the compensation amount for reconstruction of their houses.

The government has announced Rs400,000 compensation for the reconstruction of destroyed houses in Bara. The affected people told TNN that their houses have been completely destroyed due to mortar shells and recent rains. They said the government has not initiated the survey of damaged houses as yet. They said the announced compensation money is also insufficient for the reconstruction of damaged houses. They said even up to seven families reside in one house in Bara. The affected people said the repatriation process of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) has started but their houses are destroyed and they have no shelter.

“Our house and all its belongings had been reduced to ashes. All our families have come out empty handed and our houses are completely destroyed. We are in no position to reconstruct our houses. I will appeal to the government to conduct a proper survey in the area to ascertain the damages. Some people get huge compensation for negligible losses while some people despite losing everything get nothing in compensation. The Rs400,000 compensation is not enough for reconstruction of houses accommodating large families,” a tribesman from Bara told TNN.

On the other hand, Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah said survey to reconstruct damaged houses in Bara will begin soon. He hoped that in addition to the Rs400,000 compensation, charity organisations will also extend help to the returning IDPs in Khyber Agency
