PESHAWAR, October 16: By-election on the National Assembly constituency NA-149 in Multan has started today.
The seat had fallen vacant after former lawmaker of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Mr Javed Hashmi resigned it.
This time Mr Hashmi is participating in the electoral race as independent candidate although he is also having support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz while his opponent Mr Amir Dogar is contesting the by-election with the backing of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI).
In the previous elections, the Mr Hashmi had won the seat from the platform of the PTI. However, he quit the party and resigned the seat when the PTI staged a sit-in in the federal capital Islamabad in August.
Political experts say the by-election is a contest between the Pakistan Muslim League-N and PTI and that it will also decide the future politics of Mr Hashmi, who was affiliated with the PML-N before joining the PTI.
Mr Javed Siddiqui of the Pakistan People’s Party is also participating in the Multan by-election.
