PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on Thursday approved provincial Health Policy which aims to strengthen the health care system with focus on the provision of standard and durable health facilities.

Provincial Secretary Health, Dr Farooq Jamil briefed the cabinet meeting held at Jirga Hall in Landi Kotal. “The new health policy would envisage accountability and transparency in the human resources, management, governance in health facilities,” KP Secretary Health Dr Farooq Jamil said.

Farooq added that special focus will be given on preventive measures to stop the spread of epidemics besides formulating an efficient mechanism for responding to emergencies in the hospitals.

Speaking on the occasion, KP Health Minister Dr Hisham Inamullah Khan said that the poor segment of the society will benefit from the health policy. Khan termed from the cabinet a landmark achievement.

Hisham said that health policy was aimed to implement policies that would reform and strengthen KP Healthcare System, enabling it to provide essential, cost-effective and quality health care to all its citizens and with focus on developing preventive, primary & secondary healthcare and strengthening tertiary level healthcare.

He commented that measures will be taken to reduce the burden of diseases especially among vulnerable segments of the population. “Improving human resource management and enhancing health financing for efficient service delivery to the people of the province is one of the main feature of the policy,” said the minister.

“Through this policy, we will be able to strengthen preventive healthcare services focusing on child immunization, reproductive health, MNCH, malnutrition and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases,” the minister informed.  He went on to say that the policy focuses on the prevention, early detection and subsidized curative support.

The health minister said that the major killers in newborn and children under 5 years of age like diarrhea, ARI, measles, malaria and malnutrition will be countered through Integrated Management strategies.
