Legal fraternity of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday observed strike and boycotted courts’ proceedings as a protest against the outburst of PML-N leader Nihal Hashmi against judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The call of the strike was given by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council. However, some of the lawyers also opposed the strike call and said that lawyers’ leadership should also take into consideration the problems of the litigants before announcing any boycott.

As many as six people including a woman and children died and five others injured as a passenger van plunged into a deep ravine in Ogi area of district Mansehra on Saturday evening, police said. According to police the ill-fated van was going from Ogi to Bandi Parano and it fell into a ravine in Namal Kath area in the jurisdiction of Darban police station. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Elementary and Secondary Education Department has shut down about 1000 schools in the province under the rationalization policy. According to a report published in a national newspaper, the schools have been closed due to low enrollment. The paper quoted an official of the district education department saying that the government closed those schools where the number of enrolled students was less than 40. The students of these schools have been shifted to the nearest schools, the report added.
The Peshawar High Court has suspended the orders of district education department of Lower Dir regarding extended duties of security guards. After the militants attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsada earlier this year, the education department of certain districts had made it mandatory for the security guards to perform round the clock duties. The authorities had also asked the watchmen to arrange weapons for their own.
