SWAT: Speakers at a workshop in Swat on Thursday emphasised the role media in creating awareness about the importance of polio vaccination to realise the target of polio-free Pakistan.

The workshop was organised by the Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) which was attended by journalists from Swat, Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir.

Director EPI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dr Ikram Shah while speaking on the occasion urged the journalists to utilise their media forums for crating awareness among the people about vaccination to save their children from the crippling disease. He said the federal and provincial governments are utilising all resources to eliminate the disease from the country. He appreciated the role of media in countering negative propaganda against polio immunisation campaigns.

Focal person of polio eradication in KP Dr Imtiaz Ali Shah said emergency operating centres have been established at the federal and provincial levels to counter the disease.

The Wold Health Organisation (WHO) representative Dr Allauddin informed the participants that polio vaccine is safe and the same vaccine is being used in all the Islamic countries. He said it is imperative to vaccinate every child below the age of five years in every vaccination campaign to completely eradicate the disease. He said children must not miss vaccination in any campaign.
