Cigarette company’s sacked workers protest against termination

SWABI, 25 November: Workers of a cigarette manufacturing company Wednesday protested against what they called their ‘illegal’ termination by the company’s management.

As many 140 sacked workers of the Philips Morris company gathered outside the company’s premises in Ismailia area near here and established a protest camp. They were of the view that the company sacked them without serving them any prior notice, which was against the labor laws. “We demand that government should pressurize the company to restore us on our jobs as we have no other source of income,” remarked one of the sacked workers.

On the other hand, an official of the company’s management told TNN that the company had incurred loss over the past sometime and, “we have no other option to fire them.” The official though explained that the sacked employees would be given handsome financial packages.
