PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mahmood Khan on Monday taken notice of illegal cutting of forests in Swat and asked concerned authority to submit a report within a day.

The chief minster said cutting of forest will not be allowed under any circumstance as the province was already facing extreme climate changes. The CM also asked District Forest Department and police to tighten noose around timber mafia.

The district is no longer covered in lush, dense forests due to unchecked deforestation. The three years of militancy when the economy of the valley was paralysed and most infrastructure destroyed, the precious forests were mercilessly brought down by timber smugglers.

Moreover, the problem was further compounded 2010 floods that swept away hundreds of trees. Environmentalists termed the impact of floods equal to the devastation caused by illegal cutting of trees.
