PESHAWAR, 30 November: The communal teachers of Khyber and North Waziristan tribal agencies on Monday staged a sit-in in front of the FATA Secretariat building in Peshawar in favour of their demands.

The protesting teachers were demanding the FATA secretary education to regularise the services of 508 communal teachers in the tribal areas and appoint them as primary school teachers (PSTs). They were also demanding payment of their salaries under the new scale which have been stopped for the last five months.

The protesting communal teachers have also brought tents, blankets and cooking material with them and they are adamant to continue their protest till acceptance of their demands. They said they will not hold negotiations with any official other than the additional chief secretary of FATA. They also chanted slogans against the high officials of the education department.

A protesting teacher told TNN that it is not first time that their salaries have been stopped by the officials. “We have been deprived from our salaries since last five months due to which we are facing many difficulties,” he said.

Another teacher said they will not go back until their regularisation. “We demand the government to regularise us and remove those people from the education department who have been appointed through illegal means,” he said.
