PESHAWAR: The death toll in the Peshawar suicide attack on Tuesday night in which Awami National Party (ANP) leader Barrister Haroon Bilour was martyred mounted to 20 on Wednesday.
Besides death of 20 people in the tragic blast, over 60 people were also injured and were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital for treatment. A suicide bomber exploded himself near Haroon Bilour surrounded by hundreds of supporters when he arrived for a party’s corner meeting in Yakatoot area on Tuesday night.
The deceased ANP leader was also contesting election from Peshawar’s PK-78 constituency. He will be laid to rest in Wazir Bagh at 5:00pm today (Wednesday).
Haroon Bilour’s father Bashir Ahmed Bilour was also martyred in a suicide blast in 2012.
After the tragic death of Bashir Bilour, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the polls in PK-78 constituency. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (R) Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan condemned the terrorist attack and termed it a weakness of security institutions.
Meanwhile, the country’s leadership as well as foreign leaders condemned Tuesday’s terror attack and termed it a big loss for the country. The attack was condemned by caretaker Prime Minister Justice (R) Nasirul Mulk, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PML-N chief Shahbaz Sharif, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Afghan Ambassador Omar Zakhilwal and many other leaders and people from different walks of life.
