Democracy suffers defeat in Senate chairman, deputy chairman’s election: Fazl

PESHAWAR: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said democracy suffered a defeat in the election of the Senate chairman and deputy chairman.

Talking to a private news channel on Monday night, the JUI-F chief said he was particularly surprised over the huge margin in the Senate chairman’s and deputy chairman’s election. He said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were brought together forcibly by ‘someone’ for the election.

Sadiq Sanjrani, an independent Senator from Balochistan, on Monday won the election of Senate chairman as a joint candidate of the opposition. Mr Sanjrani had the support of the PPP, PTI, MQM, independent senators from FATA and Balochistan.

One hundred and three senators voted in the election: Sadiq Sanjrani got 57 votes, while Raja Zafarul Haq of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) got 46 votes. Saleem Mandviwala of the PPP was elected on the post of deputy chairman Senate.
