PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has suspended all the local governments in the country till the 25 July general elections.

The Election Commission said in a statement on Tuesday that holding of free and fair elections is the responsibility of the ECP and all necessary steps will be taken in this regard. It said the step has been taken to remove the impression that the local governments may affect the outcome of the upcoming general elections.

Earlier, the Election Commission had barred the local government representatives from participating in the campaign of the candidates in the general elections. However, this order has not been followed in letter and spirit as many local bodies representatives are seen openly running the election campaign of the candidates for the general elections.

It is for the first time in the country’s history that local governments have been suspended ahead of the general elections.
