MARDAN, 13 September: The people of Mardan have called upon the government to provide labour room and other facilities at basic health units (BHUs).
The demand was made at a seminar organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) at a local hotel in Mardan on problems faced by the people visiting BHUs on Tuesday. District Nazim Himayatullah Mayar, local government representatives, civil society activists and other people belonging to different walks of life attended the seminar. Participants of the meeting pointed out lack of facilities like labour rooms and ultrasound at 20 BHUs in Mardan. The speakers said due to lack of labour room, both the mother and child face a dangerous situation at the time of delivery. They said the infant mortality rate can be controlled by setting up labour rooms at BHUs.
Social worker Shazia Sardar told TNN that there are no separate washrooms for women at the BHUs due to which they face difficulties.
“There is urgent need to set up labour rooms at the BHUs. Lack of facilities is the main reason behind increasing mother and infant mortality rate. Labour rooms at the BHUs will greatly benefit the visiting patients,” she said.
