PESHAWAR, 10 November: Sugarcane growers have demanded of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to start crushing season from November 15.

Addressing a joint news conference in Peshawar press club here on Friday, president of the Kisan Board Rizwanullah and other office bearers also urged the provincial government to increase the support price of sugarcane.

“Last year, the support price of sugarcane was Rs180 per 50kilogram due to which the growers face Rs58 loss per 50kg. The KP government should fix the support price at Rs210 per 50 kg,” Rizwanullah said.

“When the growers reap sugarcane crops on time, they then can comfortably sow maize crop, which is in the interest of both the government and the public. That is why we demand that the crushing season should be kicked off as early as November 15,” he contended.

The farmers also demanded that the government should waive off tax imposed on the export of gurr to Central Asian states. They also demanded that the government should bound the millers to pay our dues in time.

“We will convene our board meeting on Sunday and besiege the Mardan Sugar Mill if the government doesn’t accept our demands,” the Kisan Board president warned.
