PESHAWAR, November 22: The All Tribal Grand Jirga arranged by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has appealed to the government to ensure early repatriation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to the areas cleared of militants by the security forces in North Waziristan .
The assembly also demanded that tribal elders should be authorised to solve the problems of people in the tribal belt.
Elders of various tribes and political leaders attended the gathering.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the government and armed forces should restore peace in the tribal areas as soon as possible.
Mehmood Khan Achakzai, head of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, said that the autonomy of tribal areas should be given to the elders of the region.
On the occasion, Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali said the federal and provincial governments were making efforts for repatriation of displaced people. He said the government should play its role to bring peace to the region.
The Jirga asked the government to immediately end the ongoing operation in the tribal region and announce financial assistance for the affectees.
In addition, they requested that medical, engineering and arts colleges should be established in FATA region.
