PESHAWAR, 7 November: For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the members of National Assembly from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) have fielded their candidate for the election of the NA Speaker.
The FATA lawmakers have nominated Ghazi Gulab Jamal as candidate for the coveted post of Speaker National Assembly. The FATA parliamentarians submitted nomination papers in the National Assembly Secretariat for this purpose on Friday.
Later addressing a press conference they sought the support of other political parties for their candidate. The election of the new speaker will be held on Monday.
The seat of the NA Speaker fell vacant after de-notification of ex-Speaker Ayaz Sadiq by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) when an election tribunal ordered re-election on NA-122 constituency of Lahore, from where Ayaz Sadiq had defeated the PTI chief Imran Khan in the 2013 elections. Ayaz Sadiq also returned successful in the by-election and the PML-N has again decided to field him as candidate for NA Speaker’s slot.
The main opposition parties, except the PTI, have announced support for Ayaz Sadiq. The PTI has fielded Shafqat Mehmood for the NA Speaker election. Imran Khan’s party alleges that Ayaz Sadiq won both the elections through rigging and they will not recognise him as Speaker.
Earlier, in the day, the FATA lawmakers wanted to speak on the earthquake calamity in the National Assembly but they were denied permission, which prompted them to protest in front of the Speaker’s chair.
