ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday announced abolition of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and Press Council of Pakistan.

Addressing a press briefing, the federal minister said that a unified Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority will be created with the merger of existing two aforementioned departments.

Chaudhry stressed on one regulatory authority to look after all mediums while calling for applying same laws across the board. Replying to a question, information minister asserted PTI had lifted censorship from the state-run PTV.

“We have decided to establish a new media regulatory authority which will look after electronic, print and social media simultaneously,” he said.

Fawad Chaudhry said that a Committee has been set up to streamline government advertisements, adding that, the federal government would spend Rs17 billion on advertisements in past.

The minister said that the state-run Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) will telecast the parliament proceedings live.
