DERA ISMAIL KHA,N 21 May: Deputy Commissioner Dera Ismail Khan Nisar Ahmed inaugurated the first-ever GIS (Geographical Information System) cell in the district facilitating the district authorities to use field and file data and plan and monitor public service delivery more smartly.
The government officers in the district now will have the facility of a full-fledged GIS cell and GIS Analyst, for taking important decisions making, as per the needs of the citizens, says a press release.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Umar Javeed, will act as ‘focal person’ for GIS in DI Khan coordinating and consolidating data flow from and between different departments and deputy commissioner office. As the volume of data has grown and the methods of analysing them have improved, government departments have been integrating data more firmly into the decision-making process. However, increasing numbers of traditional and non-traditional data sources are inundating government departments with data in volumes and types they may not have seen before. Government departments are finding an increasing gap between the acquisition of data and their meaningful use.
The introduction of GIS model in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was instrumental to equip the government departments with technology to bridge this gap, for the effective use of “big data” for data-driven-decision-making. The government of KP through the Sub-National Governance (SNG) Programme piloted the use of GIS in Haripur and Karak districts in 2015. The experiment lead to effective planning and monitoring of service delivery processes by district departments. Consequently, the SNG Programme extended the GIS implementation in four other districts of KP including Buner, Nowshera, Lakki Marwat and now DI Khan.
The provincial government adopting the GIS model has decided to shift 14 districts in the province to GIS integrated planning and monitoring mechanisms in first phase. To backstop government operations, a central GIS hub was been created at the Planning and Development Department, with a lead role of the Chief Secretary Office.
