Four policemen die in DI Khan firing

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Four policemen lost their lives in an attack on a police van in Dera Ismail Khan on Tuesday.

District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Iqbal said the policemen were on a routine patrol in a mobile van in Mara area of Purwa tehsil when unidentified armed men opened fire on them. The assailants escaped the scene after the attack.

The martyred policemen were identified as constables Sarfaraz, Mir Baz, Asif and driver Javed. Station House Officer (SHO) Purwa Police Station Tahir Nawaz and two passers-by were also injured in the firing who were taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police cordoned off the entire area after the incident and launched a search operation. However, no arrest was made till filing of this report.

Policemen often come under attack from militants in Dera Ismail Khan which shares a border with South Waziristan.

On 29 January, an official of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Kamran, was shot dead by unidentified armed men in DI Khan. Police said the incident happened in Gali Qureshian Wali in the jurisdiction of City Police Station. The CTD official was going for his duty from his home when he was targeted by two militants riding a motorcycle.

On 9 January, two policemen were injured in a bomb attack in Kulachi area of DI Khan. A homemade bomb planted on the roadside exploded near a police van when they were on routine patrol. Driver Zahoor and constable Fareed were injured in the incident while the police van was damaged.

Levies, Khassadar personnel suspended

The administration of Khyber tribal district has suspended the Levies and Khassadar personnel involved in firing on a van near Sardar Killi area of Jamrud tehsil.

According to a notification issued from the office of the deputy commissioner Khyber district, three girls were injured in firing by Levies and Khassadar personnel on a van after which an inquiry team probed the matter. It said that under the recommendations of the inquiry team, Naib Subedar Zulfiqar Kokikhel, Khassadar Abdul Wahab Kokikhel, Allah Dost Kokikhel, Muhammad Ghani Kamarkhel and Levies sepoy Fazle Akbar have been suspended.

The incident of firing on a van by the security personnel drew resentment after which the district administration had ordered probe into the incident.
