PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government Tuesday decided to establish Darul Amans (shelter homes) in Dera Ismail Khan, Buner, Nowshera and Swabi districts.

The decision was taken in a meeting on shelter homes chaired by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan. The meeting was informed that shelter homes were fully functioned in various districts of KP, and work on shelter home is in progress in Lower Dir, while the shelter home in Kohat was being upgraded. All the male staff in shelter homes, except for watchmen, have been replaced with female staff, and 72 new vacancies were created to overcome the deficiency of staff. The advisory committee for all Darul Amans has been notified and uniform food for all the centres has also been put in place.

The meeting was told that the KP government had inked an agreement with Pakistan Baitul Mal for the establishment and operation of eight shelter homes with two in Peshawar and one each at divisional headquarters. Four such shelter homes are already functional and about 97,000 people are availing facilities in those Panahgahs.

The meeting was briefed that the remaining four Panahgahs would be made functional next month. Hiring of staff, purchase of vehicles and other necessary equipment for these Panahgahs had been completed. It was further shared that rules have been approved under the Panahgahs Act 2020, while work on the establishment of boards for those shelter homes was in process.

Mahmood Khan termed establishment of Panahgahs as an integral part of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision of a welfare state and said that the provincial government was taking concrete steps for the effective and better management of those Panahgahs in order to facilitate maximum deserving people.

The chief minister said philanthropists must be included in the boards as members so that better administration of Panahgahs could be ensured. The chief minister also directed the authorities concerned to ensure implementation of uniform food manual in Darul Aman.

The chief minister directed the authorities to submit proposals for the establishment of training centres for the rehabilitation and skills development of drug addicts in order to make them useful citizens.
