DI KHAN, September 9: Gandapur tribesmen staged demonstration, demanding water from the Gomal Zam Dam for irrigation of their fields in Kulachi tehsil of Dera Ismail Khan district.

The demonstrators blocked DI Khan-Tank Road for some time in Hathala area. They asked the government to provide water from the dam to Kulachi area, as is being given to other areas. They said the dam has occupied thousands of acres lands of the local residents.

“The dam has two purposes: electricity generation and irrigation of fields from its water. But the authorities are not releasing water to irrigate our lands. If they cannot resolve the energy crisis, they should at least solve the irrigation problem of people,” said one of the demonstrators.

Another one said they would continue their protest till their demand was fulfilled. “People have no option but to sell their lands as there is lack of water for irrigation. The government should solve our problem forthwith,” he added.

However, the management of the dam says it is the responsibility of the federal government to decide distribution of water and issues of canals.
