BUNER: A girl, who entered marriage according to her own choice, has been killed in the name of honour in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Police said they received information that the body of a young girl was dumped in a deserted place in Chalanderi, Pir Baba. The police took the body into custody and took it to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital Pir Baba for post mortem.
A police official told TNN that the girl had entered court marriage with a boy according to her own choice which annoyed her family members. Sources said the couple had come to a local court in Daggar area for anticipator bail which was granted by the court. Other sources said that on return from the court on Monday, some persons forcibly took the girl in their vehicle and later her body was found from Chalanderi area.
Station house officer of Pir Baba Police Station said investigation has been launched into the incident and facts about the matter would be unveiled soon. Sources said the father and brothers of the girl have been accused of killing her. The girl’s father, Alamzeb has been arrested, while brothers have escaped and search for them is continuing.
It is the second incident of honour killing in Buner this month. Last week, a girl was shot dead in the name of honour in the jurisdiction of Daggar Police Station. Police had arrested the brother, sister-in-law and uncle of the deceased girl on suspicion of murder. Sources said the arrested persons confessed to their crime during interrogation.
In 2014, a law was passed in Pakistan which fixed seven years term for culprits involved in honour killing. This term was increased to 25 years as the law was amended in 2016. The amendment also ensured that the culprits in such crimes will complete sentence even if the families of the victims forgive them. However, honour killings did not stop.
According to a report of the Ministry of Interior and National Police Bureau, 1,548 people were killed for honour during June 2014-18. The campaigners against honour killings also face very tough time and threats.
