Governor KP Shah Farman visits Orakzai tribal district

KALAYA: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shah Farman said on Saturday that the terror attack in Orakzai tribal district was carried out by foreign elements to create sectarian strife and destabilize the region.

The Friday explosion in Kalaya bazaar, which is dominated by Shia Muslims, left 34 people dead and as many as injured.  Shia organizations and leaders in Kurram tribal district and Peshawar staged protest against the attack and asked the government to bring the culprits to the task.

The Shia and Sunni populations based in the lower and upper district respectively have lived in peace for decades except of experiencing sporadic violent incidents.  Referring to the harmony and unity between the two sects the governor said that enemies wanted to create disharmony and chaos through such attacks which could be foiled with the help of local people.

“The yesterday terror attacks in Karachi and Orakzai tribal district are part of the same conspiracy and foreign elements are involved who want to destabilise the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC) project”, he said during his visit to Kalaya tehsil of Orakzai district.

Corps Commander Lt Gen Shaheen Mazhar and Inspector General Frontier Corps Maj Gen Rahat Naseem Ahmed accompanied him to see the site of the blast in lower Orakzai.

Lt Gen Mazhar confirmed that the blast was a suicide attack in which 10-12 kg of explosives were used. Earlier Commissioner Kohat division Mutahir Zeb said that the blast was carried out by a motorcyclist in front of a mosque in Kalaya bazaar. At least 40 people were injured in the blast.

Around 27 dead were laid to rest in various areas of the district on Saturday as seven of the victims were already buried on Friday in Kalaya bazaar where their collective funeral prayer was offered.

Governor Farman told reporter that stern action would be taken against the culprits behind the attack. He along with military commanders met with the relatives of Kalaya blast’s victims and offered prayers for departed souls.
