PESHAWAR, 4 June: The federal government says polio cases in Pakistan have reduced by 70 percent this year.

According to officials, the situation has improved greatly due to the ongoing operation in North Waziristan Agency where the polio workers had no access earlier. The officials said 25 cases have surfaced in Pakistan during the current year.

The Prime Minister’s Focal Person on Polio Eradication Senator Ayesha Raza says the military operation in North Waziristan has taken long time but it has certainly proved good for polio eradication efforts in Pakistan. She said only seven polio cases have been reported from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) this year, while no case has surfaced in Karachi.

Ms Ayesha said attacks on polio teams have also reduced as most people involved in such attacks have been arrested.
