PHC issues stay order against school teachers' polio duty

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Tuesday restrained cantonment board and private contractors from collecting ‘illegal’ parking fee on the roadside, in front of shopping centres, in Saddar.

A bench of high court ordered the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the cantonment board to take action against illegal parking stands in Saddar and submit a report to the court today (Wednesday).

The order was issued by a two-judge bench of the High Court comprising Justice Qaisar Rashid and Justice Abdul Shakoor while hearing a petition submitted by Ibrahim Khan, a resident of Peshawar.

Khan has challenged that parking fee is being collected from the dwellers of Gor Gathi (heritage trail). The petitioner informed that he cannot even park his car outside his house without paying the parking fee to the administration.

Justice Qaisar Rashid in his remarks said that shoppers are being forced to pay the fee for their car even if it is parked on the roadside, which the judge termed, unjustified. Justice Rashid said that he has personally visited Peshawar Saddar for shopping when he stopped his car in front of a shopping centre, a boy handed him a parking Parchi.

The court has called the CEO cantonment board in the previous hearing of the case to stop such practice, however, he failed to implement the order. When the CEO appeared before court Justice Qaiser directed him to explain what actions he has taken illegal contractors, but he couldn’t present a solid argument.

Justice Qaisar, who was heading the two-judge bench, remarked that the public is already suppressed by the high prices of essential commodities. Now making them pay for parking on the roadside, said the judge, will be an extra burden on them.

The court ordered the CEO of the cantonment board to visit different areas and take strict action against illegal parking stands on roadsides and submit a report to the bench today (Wednesday).
