PESHAWAR, May 1: The International Labor Day is being observed across the globe including Pakistan today.
The day is marked to appreciate the services of the workers.
A number of labour unions staged rallies and held ceremonies. The first of May is an official holiday in almost all countries, including Pakistan.
One Fida Muhammad, who works as labourer all the day in the provincial capital Peshawar, told TNN, “My income is not fixed. If I earn 800 rupees today, the earning may not be the same tomorrow.”
He added that he tried to save money on a daily basis for a ‘rainy day’.
Another worker, Shahid, said, “I cannot study due to lack of finances. My father takes cares of cattle at home and I do hard jobs in the city to earn money for my family.”
International Workers’ Day is the commemoration of the May 4, 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago where the police fired shots to disperse a public assembly, killing four demonstrators. The demonstration had been staged for the eight-hour workday.
