PESHAWAR: Defending champions Islamabad United defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 12 runs in a match of the Pakistan Super League in Sharjah on Friday.
Islamabad United after being invited to bat first scored 158 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Ian Bell made a good entry to the PSL with 54 runs, Delport made 29, while Ronchi made 21.
For Zalmi, Sameen Gul took three wickets, Hasan Ali took two wickets, while Umaid Asif, Pollard and Wahab Riaz took one wicket each.
In reply, Zalmi were all out on 146 runs in the penultimate over and fell short by 12 runs. Pollard was top scorer with 51 runs, Dowson scored 21 runs and Wahab Riaz scored 20 runs.
Islamabad United bowlers displayed a good show and sent the Zalmi team crashing 12 runs short. The bowling effort included a hat-trick from captain Mohammad Sami who took three wickets, Muhammad Musa also took three wickets, Faheem Ashraf took two wickets and Shadab Khan and Samit Patel took one wicket each.
Mohammad Sami was declared player of the match for his brilliant bowling.
Quetta Gladiators are still on top of the points table with six points, followed by Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars with four points each and then Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings on two points each.
Qalandars down Sultans in a high-scorer
The earlier match of the day was a high scoring thriller in which Lahore Qalandars defeated Multan Sultans in the last over by six wickets.
Sultans after being invited to bat first scored a massive total and gave Qalandars 201 runs to win. James Vince was top scorer with 84 runs, Umar Siddiq scored 53 and Christian scored 21.
For Qalandars, Lamichhane took three wickets, and Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi took one wicket each.
Qalandars chased the target in the penultimate over of the game due to brilliant batting of Fakhar Zaman, AB de Villiers and Wiese who scored 63, 52 and 45 runs respectively.
For Sultans, Junaid Khan took three wickets, while Mohammad Ilyas took one wicket. De Villiers was declared player of the match.
Two matches will be played in PSL today (Saturday). In first match, Gladiators will take on Qalandars, while in the second match, Islamabad United will face Karachi Kings.
