PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor has signed two ordinances – Levies Transition Ordinance 2019 and Khasadar Protection and Regularization Ordinance – under which both the forces from Tribal Districts will function under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act 2017.
The approval of both the ordinances was given in meeting yesterday which was presided by the advisor to Prime Minister Arbab Shahzada. The ordinance provides for the maintenance and regularization of levies and Khasadar force and a legal cover for the eventual merger of K-P Levies Forces to K-P Police.
Under the ordinance, the forces will be renamed as ‘KP Levies’ and ‘KP Khasadar force and will have the charge of policing in tribal districts under Director General (DG) and Deputy Director Generals (DDG) to be appointed by KP government in consultation with Inspector General of Police.
The ordinances provide that DG, DDG and Commandant will be appointed by the KP police. The DG will supervise and oversee administration while the operational control will rest with the Commandant. The Commandant will have the authority to post and transfers members of the forces within the district while the DG is empowered to post and transfer members of the forces from one district to another in the region.
The DDG is given the power to post and transfer members of the forces from one district to another within the region. The forces will have the same duties as specified in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Ordinance 2017. “The force shall have all the powers conferred on Police by the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 as exercised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Ordinance, 2017, for the performance of their duties and functions,” reads point eight of the ordinance. “The Commandant shall provide assistance and support to the District Administration and Heads of all Public Agencies in the District, required for performing their official duties.”
