PESHAWAR, 13 October: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday passed Journalist Welfare Endowment Fund Amendment Bill under which the heirs of media persons losing their life in terror incidents while performing their duty will get Rs1 million compensation.

All the political and religious parties in the KP Assembly except the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supported the bill which was tabled on Monday. Under the new law, the journalists who suffer from any disability in terror incidents will get Rs200,000 compensation. The deserving journalists will also be entitled to medical funds up to Rs100,000 in case of serious illness.

A journalist told TNN that the approval of this bill by the KP government is highly commendable which will greatly encourage the media persons to work with more dedication for rights of people. “Now we have got more strength to convey the grievances of people to concerned authorities and fight for their rights,” he said.

Another journalist said the approval of the bill demonstrates recognition of efforts and sacrifices of media persons by the government.
